Coexisting bladder and bowel dysfunction is quite common, and can be frequent in certain groups of patients.

While bladder dysfunction is reasonably well studied and its management is often included in clinical practice, much less is known about bowel dysfunction alone or in combination with bladder problems. Experiencing both conditions can be very problematic, and is known to have a major impact on a person’s quality of life.

In some groups, combined dysfunction is a common problem:

  • 90% of children with spina bifida
  • 47% of adults with spina bifida
  • 66% of multiple sclerosis patients
  • 8% at 12 months after first delivery
  • 7% of women aged 62-87
